Abstract Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have quickly become one of the promising Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices for smart cities. Thanks to their mobility, agility, and onboard sensors’ customizability, UAVs already demonstrated immense potential numerous commercial applications. The expansion will come at price a dense, high-speed dynamic traffic prone going rogue or deployed with malicious intent. Counter UAV systems (C-UAS) are thus required ensure operations safe. Existing C-UAS, which majority from military domain, lack scalability induce collateral damages. This paper proposes C-UAS able intercept escort intruders. It relies on an autonomous defense swarm, capable self-organizing formation UAV. fully localized GPS-free approach follows modular design regarding phases it uses newly developed balanced clustering realize intercept- capture-formation. resulting networked swarm is resilient communication losses. Finally, prototype simulator has been implemented. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate feasibility performance our approach.
